How much gravel do I need?
For a rectangle, multiply length × width × depth, with all dimensions in the same unit. For a circle, use π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. If you already know the area, multiply it by depth. Add non-overlapping sections, then apply your chosen allowance.
Example: 20 ft × 12 ft × (3 ÷ 12) ft = 60 ft³. Divide by 27 to get 2.222… yd³. At the labelled example density of 2,410 lb/yd³, that is about 5,356 lb, or 2.68 US short tons. Your material may have a different density.
From volume to a purchase order
Estimated mass = ordered volume × bulk density. A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Bulk minimums and increments may increase the actual order. Bag count is rounded up only after dividing the required volume or mass by the bag's stated content.
The calculator keeps the measured layer, allowance and purchase rounding separate. A percentage allowance is an explicit ordering assumption, not a geotechnical compaction model. Confirm suitable depth, grading, density and delivery limits for your project.
Questions about gravel estimates
Can I calculate several areas together?
Yes. Add rectangles, circles or known areas with their own depths. Avoid overlapping areas and use the same material density for the combined order. Calculate different materials separately.
Can I use this without knowing the density?
Yes. Leave density blank to calculate volume, volume-labelled bags and volume-priced bulk orders. Mass-labelled purchases need your material's bulk density.
Does the estimate include compaction?
Only the allowance you enter. There is no universal percentage for every gravel or project. Ask your supplier how to convert your specified finished layer to an order.
Are delivery and taxes included?
Delivery is included only when you supply a per-load fee and load capacity. Taxes, spreading and equipment are excluded unless included in your entered quote. Bag cost excludes separate delivery.
