Tile Layout Calculator — Square Feet, Edge Cuts & Boxes

Compare centered tile layouts and both orientations, then calculate square footage, edge cuts, tiles, boxes, waste, grout and cost.

Measure the tiled surface

Room dimensions calculate square footage. A straight grid also shows rows, columns, and possible narrow edge cuts.

Tile and layout

Enter the tile dimensions, choose a complete layout example, or refine the joint, orientation and starting line.

Boxes, waste & cost (optional)

Use the square feet printed on the carton when available. It is more reliable than assuming every box contains the same number of pieces.

Compare the smallest edge piece with the tile turned both ways. The preview uses your selected orientation.

Edge pieces are at least half a tile in this starting layout.
5 columns × 8 rows = 40 tiles; + 10% waste = 44 tiles; 88 sq ft required ÷ 16 sq ft per box = 6 boxes.

How the tile estimate is calculated

How to calculate tile square footage

Measure the surface in feet and multiply length × width. A 10 ft × 8 ft floor is 80 sq ft. For several walls, calculate each rectangle separately and add the results; subtract large untiled openings only when they materially change the order. The calculator then converts that square footage into whole tiles and boxes.

Tile layout calculator for floors and walls

Use room dimensions to calculate rows, columns and edge cuts. Centered mode balances the cuts on opposing edges; full-tile mode starts at one corner. Compare both tile orientations before snapping reference lines. For a multi-room floor plan, use the floor plan square footage calculator, then enter its total in Known area mode.

How to avoid narrow tile edge cuts

The orientation comparison reports the smallest visible edge piece for a straight grid. A centered layout automatically shifts the grid when a corner start would leave a sliver. Room walls are rarely perfectly square, so dry-lay a row with the actual spacers and confirm all dimensions on site before installation.

    Tile layout and waste allowance

Straight layouts commonly use about 10% waste, staggered patterns about 12%, and diagonal patterns about 15%. Add more for complex rooms, many corners, fragile tile, or a pattern that must align. Diagonal and staggered previews are planning guides because the final cuts depend on the installer’s starting line.

    Boxes and tile material cost

Enter the coverage printed on the box and its price; if the label only lists pieces, switch to Tiles per box. The calculator rounds up to whole cartons, then shows purchased coverage, the allowance above room area, and material cost. Labor, adhesive, trim, membrane, tax and installation are not included.

    Grout calculator estimate

The grout estimate uses tile size, joint width, thickness, and tiled area with a typical cured grout density. Product yield varies, so use the grout manufacturer’s coverage chart before purchasing. For a whole-project order using your product’s actual coverage, use the grout package calculator to combine surfaces and keep colours separate.

Considering laminate instead? Use the laminate flooring calculator to compare row direction, account for whole panels already available and combine room orders for the same product.

Considering a soft floor instead? Use the carpet roll calculator to compare roll lengths, seams and your quoted costs for a rectangular room.
