How tubing capacity is calculated

The calculator treats the tubing bore as a cylinder. With internal diameter in inches, the oilfield capacity factor is ID² ÷ 1029.4 bbl/ft. Total filled volume equals that capacity multiplied by measured string length and the selected fill percentage.

Use actual IDOD or nominal size alone can overstate fluid capacity.

Example: 2⅜-inch tubing

If the verified internal diameter is 1.995 in, capacity is 0.00387 bbl/ft. A 1,000 ft completely filled string contains about 3.87 bbl, 162.4 US gal or 614.7 L.

Choose by nominal size and tubing weight

If the actual ID is not yet at hand, the quick selector can load common pipe-body dimensions for 2⅜, 2⅞, 3½, 4½ and 5½-inch tubing. The same nominal outside diameter can have several weights and internal diameters, so keep the selected ID visible and replace it with the verified tally or product value when available. Reference dimensions are from the TenarisHydril connections catalogue.

From tubing volume to pump time

A displacement plan starts with the internal tubing volume, adds the selected operational allowance, and divides the planned barrels by the verified pump rate. If a calibrated pump factor is available, planned strokes equal planned barrels divided by barrels per stroke. Inside-fluid velocity is calculated for every selected bore as 0.4085 × gal/min ÷ ID²; a stepped string therefore shows the slowest-to-fastest range rather than hiding the smallest-ID section.
