Equal-length pieces may share a stock board only when they fit with the entered saw kerf. The cut list is one purchasing scenario, not a globally minimum purchase or a structural layout. Offcuts from ripped edge strips are not reused.
How many deck boards do I need?
First count rows using the actual board width and side gap: round up (deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap). The first and last strips are balanced to fill the measured width. Then check which row pieces can actually be cut from each available stock board.
For the default 16 × 12 ft deck, 5.5 in boards and 1/8 in side gaps require 26 rows. With 16 ft stock and no end trim, that is 26 base boards plus 3 extra at 10%: 29 boards. Both edge strips are 4.4375 in wide.
Why total linear feet can understate an order
26 rows of 9 ft need 234 linear feet. Dividing by 12 ft suggests 20 stock boards, but a 12 ft board yields only one continuous 9 ft row. A no-joint scenario therefore needs 26 boards before extras. Shorter pieces can share a board when their lengths and saw cuts fit.
Compare the real cut patterns and manufacturer requirements before choosing a cheaper option. Joists, joint blocking, allowable spans, fastening, edge support and required staggering are outside this quantity model.
Questions about deck-board quantities
Does the calculator include stairs and borders?
No. It covers a single rectangular field of straight rows. For a straight flight, use the stair stringer calculator to compare rise, going and the available run. Calculate fascia, picture frames and framing separately.
Are the suggested gaps suitable for every product?
No. The initial gaps are editable examples. Product, fastener, temperature and moisture conditions can change installation requirements.
Does a cut list prove the joints can be installed?
No. Equal segments may put joints in the same line. Confirm supporting members and required staggering before ordering or installing.
What does unused length include?
Stock length left after the required pieces, including reserved end trim and saw cuts. Extra uncut boards and material removed by ripping edge strips are separate.
