How the paving estimate works

Start with the finished rectangle: area = length × width. The base footprint adds the specified extension only along checked open edges. Compacted base volume = extended footprint × base depth. Bedding volume uses the finished paved area, without the extension.

Purchase volumes multiply these layer volumes by their separate allowances. An allowance of 25% means multiplying by 1.25; it does not mean that any particular aggregate will compact by 25%. Ask the supplier how to convert your specified compacted volume into an order.

Coverage and stone counts are separate checks

Coverage packs = round up [finished area × (1 + paver allowance ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per pack]. When pieces per pack is entered, stone-count packs = round up [round up(layout stones × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ pieces per pack]. The order uses the larger pack count.

The straight-layout count includes every whole stone and every separate cut piece. Each cut consumes a new stone; offcuts are not reused. The extra allowance remains a separate provision for breakage and spares. If pieces per pack is unknown, the coverage result alone cannot confirm that the order contains enough stones for all cuts.

Worked patio example

A 12 × 10 ft patio has 120 sq ft of paving. Extending the base 6 in on all four sides gives 13 × 11 ft, or 143 sq ft. At a specified 6 in compacted depth, that is 71.5 cu ft; adding an illustrative 25% purchase allowance gives 89.375 cu ft, about 3.31 cu yd.

With 5% paver allowance, the coverage target is 126 sq ft. Packs covering 20 sq ft require 7 packs, providing 140 sq ft. This example uses 12 × 12 in faces, ⅛ in joints and 20 stones per pack; change these values to match your product.

What this calculator does not specify

Layer depths, base extensions and material allowances are editable examples, not universal installation requirements. Soil, frost, drainage and vehicle loads can change the necessary construction. Follow the product instructions and your project specification.

The diagram covers one rectangular area and one rectangular stone size in a straight grid. Mixed-size patterns, herringbone, border courses, irregular boundaries, saw kerf and offcut optimisation need a separate layout. Joint mix is estimated only from the coverage you supply. The price result covers paving packs only, excluding other materials, delivery, tax and labour unless included in your quoted pack price.
