Laminate Flooring Calculator — Layout, Cartons & Cost

Plan laminate for multiple rooms. Compare row direction, reuse compatible offcuts and calculate separate carton orders with existing stock and your prices.

Plan your laminate, room by room

6 cartons to buy

View purchase list

Compare row direction and plan a shared carton order. Assign each room to its exact product and enter the installation constraints from its instructions.

Try a worked example

Each example replaces the current project. These are synthetic dimensions and constraints, not instructions for a specific product.

12 × 10 ft rooms, 48 × 8 in panels, 8 panels per carton. Example gap ¼ in, end piece and stagger 12 in, edge width 2 in, kerf ⅛ in. Enter your actual product requirements.

Entered dimensions resolve to the nearest 0.001 mm. Switching units preserves the original dimensions. Displayed cut dimensions are rounded; verify dimensions before cutting.

1. Your laminate

Example values are not universal installation instructions. Stock means whole usable panels. Extra reserve means additional uncut panels.

Cutting heuristic, not a guaranteed minimum order. Rooms are independent rectangles, not a continuous installation through doorways. Labour, trims and tax are excluded.

How the purchase plan works

From rows to cartons

The calculator subtracts the entered expansion gap from both sides of each independent rectangle, balances the first and last row widths, and searches for starter lengths that meet your minimum end-piece and joint-offset constraints.

It allocates those pieces to panels, retaining suitable factory locking edges. Crosscuts and width cuts consume the entered saw kerf. Compatible offcuts can be used in another room assigned to the same product. No panel is rotated or flipped.

For each product: cartons = round up ((panels opened + extra uncut reserve − whole panels available) ÷ panels per carton), with a minimum purchase of zero.

Why a shared order can save a carton

The example room opens 45 panels. One room needs 6 cartons of 8, leaving 3 uncut panels. Three identical rooms open 135 panels and need 17 cartons, leaving 1. Ordering each room separately would mean 18 cartons. Different products remain separate even when their dimensions match.

Cutting waste is not additional reserve

Saw kerf and leftover pieces are already represented by the cutting model. Extra reserve is a number of additional whole panels you want to keep. Do not add a generic waste percentage to this plan without checking whether it duplicates the allowance you want.

Existing stock must consist of whole, usable panels of the exact same product. Arbitrary old offcuts are not counted as full panels. A remaining cut piece is not the same as an uncut spare.

What this layout does not establish

This is a deterministic cutting heuristic, not a proof of the smallest possible order. Failure to find a starter sequence does not prove the room is impossible to lay. Check measurements, compare the other direction and review your product instructions.

Doorways, connected spaces, angled walls, herringbone, obstacles, transitions, moisture control and installation certification are outside the rectangular model. Treat separate rectangles as separate installation areas; do not use them to certify a continuous floor through doorways. Check the exact product instructions before ordering or cutting.

Product instructions and related tools

Use the exact installation guide for your product and region. The Quick-Step laminate installation guide illustrates why row widths, joint offsets and product instructions matter; it does not establish universal US requirements. Our editable presets are synthetic examples.

For trim around the finished floor, use the baseboard cutting planner to allocate measured wall runs to stock boards. For other floor materials, use the tile calculator or carpet calculator.
