Grout Calculator — Coverage & Package Purchase Plan

Plan grout for floors, walls and backsplashes. Combine product-specific coverage, keep colours separate, and get whole packages, remainder and an optional cost.

Grout calculator · a purchase plan for the whole project

Turn product coverage into a shopping list

1 package to buy

2 surfaces · 1 product/colour/package combination

Use the manufacturer’s coverage for each surface. Matching packages are combined before rounding; different colours stay separate.

Start with an editable example

These are purchasing examples, not manufacturer rates or installation recommendations. Every example replaces the whole project.

1. Products you will buy

Keep each product, colour and package size separate. A different bag size or kit is a different order line.

2. Surfaces to grout

For each surface, enter the area covered by one selected package at your actual tile dimensions, joint width and fill depth. Do not use coverage for a different tile size.

Your grout purchase plan

Order cost: enter a price for every used product.

Colours show each surface’s share of the purchased packages. Pale space is estimated remainder after your reserve.

  • Bathroom floor · 0.4 packages40 ft² ÷ 100 ft²/package · 0% additional reserveIllustrative coverage only. Replace with the manufacturer’s rate for your tile size, joint width and fill depth.
  • Shower walls · 0.6 packages90 ft² ÷ 150 ft²/package · 0% additional reserveIllustrative coverage only. Replace with the manufacturer’s rate for your tile size, joint width and fill depth.

Estimated remainder after reserve: 0 of this package. Coverage of the remainder depends on the surface.

Estimate only. Verify coverage and suitability with the product manufacturer. Keep products, colours and package sizes separate. Remainder is a fraction of a package after your reserve, not measured waste. Cost excludes tax, shipping and tools unless included in your entered quote.

Find the right coverage rate

Smaller tiles create more joints per square foot. Wider or deeper joints also use more grout. Look up your exact product and package, then match the tile dimensions, joint width and fill depth in its coverage chart or calculator.

What the product’s coverage must match

A · Tile face
Length and width of the actual tile.
B · Joint width
The gap between tiles.
C · Fill depth
The depth filled with grout.

Why sum before rounding?

A floor needing 0.4 of a package and walls needing 0.6 of the same package need one package together. Rounding each surface separately would suggest two. If the colours or products differ, each needs its own whole package.

How additional reserve works

For each surface: area ÷ coverage per package × (1 + additional reserve ÷ 100). Add these requirements for each matching product, then round up. If the supplied rate already includes your desired allowance, enter 0% extra. There is no hidden 10% addition.

Can I convert joint volume directly to bags?

Not from cured density alone. Dry powder, ready-mixed grout and multi-part kits have different product yields. Use verified coverage per package for the actual product. Irregular tiles, mosaics, jobsite waste and workmanship can change the result.

Sources and next steps

CUSTOM’s material tools provide product-specific estimates. Its White Dry Non-Sanded Grout coverage guide illustrates why tile size, thickness and joint width matter. This independent planner is not affiliated with a manufacturer and does not store a universal brand coverage table.
