Closed-end versus open-end pipe displacement
Closed-end displacement is the full cylindrical volume bounded by pipe OD. It applies only when the end condition makes the bore part of the displaced envelope. Open-end displacement, also called body or metal displacement in this geometry-only estimate, subtracts the internal bore and counts only the pipe material.
The calculator uses the oilfield relationships OD² ÷ 1,029.4 bbl/ft for closed-end displacement, ID² ÷ 1,029.4 bbl/ft for internal capacity, and (OD² − ID²) ÷ 1,029.4 bbl/ft for open-end displacement. This makes the identity visible: closed-end displacement minus internal capacity equals open-end displacement.

Pipe displacement questions
What is the difference between closed-end and open-end pipe displacement?
Closed-end displacement uses the full volume bounded by pipe OD. Open-end displacement subtracts the hollow internal capacity and represents the pipe body or metal volume for a uniform tube.
How do you calculate pipe displacement in bbl per foot?
For dimensions in inches, closed-end displacement is OD squared divided by 1,029.4. Open-end displacement is OD squared minus ID squared, divided by 1,029.4.
Does the calculator include tool joints and couplings?
No. It models a uniform pipe body. Add separate geometry or use approved tally data when connections, tool joints or other equipment materially change displacement.
