How to calculate sod rolls and pallets
Measure each lawn area and subtract beds, paths and other cutouts. Add the net areas, then apply the extra allowance for cuts. Divide by coverage per roll and round up to a whole roll. For full pallets only, divide that roll count by rolls per pallet and round up again.
If your supplier sells individual rolls, the mixed option uses full pallets plus just enough loose rolls to meet the required count. It is a quantity-efficient option, not an automatic guarantee of the lowest price: pallet discounts may make an extra full pallet cheaper.
Example: a 1,200-square-foot lawn
With 10% extra, planned coverage is 1,320 ft². At 10 ft² per roll, you need 132 rolls. With 60 rolls per pallet, order either 3 full pallets (180 rolls) or, when available, 2 pallets plus 12 loose rolls (132 rolls). The full-pallet option leaves 480 ft² beyond the planned extra allowance.
Why installation uses a different area
Material is charged on the purchased quantity, including rounding and extra. The preparation and installation estimates use the net lawn area: 1,200 ft² in the example, not 1,320 or 1,800 ft². Confirm whether your contractor bills this way; a minimum fee, removal, equipment and fixed charges need a separate final quote.
Upfront payment versus refundable deposit
Upfront payment includes material, delivery, preparation, installation and the entered deposit for each full pallet. The conditional after-refund amount excludes that deposit. It assumes every charged pallet is accepted for a full refund; return travel and damaged pallets can change your final expense. Loose-roll packaging deposits are not inferred.
What if prices are unknown or change by quantity?
Leave unknown values blank; use 0 only for free or unnecessary items. Enter the supplier’s final unit quote for the actual order size. This planner does not automatically apply volume discounts or calculate tax. Both order options use the same delivery quote; if shipping or rates differ, compare separately using the final quoted charges.
Can this plan tell me when and how to install sod?
No. It estimates quantities and entered costs. It does not choose grass species, determine site preparation, assess drainage, calculate transport weight or recommend an installation schedule. Follow local turf guidance and your supplier’s storage and installation instructions.
Measurement accuracy
Rectangle area is length × width. Circle area uses π × diameter² ÷ 4 with an approximation of π. For irregular lawns, use separate simple areas without overlapping them, or enter a measured area. Display values are rounded; whole-roll counts use the underlying measurements.
