Try a worked example
What the measurements mean
For a symmetrical gable, the horizontal run to the ridge face is half the building span minus half the ridge thickness. Multiply each horizontal length by √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²) to find its sloping length.
The diagram is a geometric section: it does not choose timber sizes, connections, roof covering or safe loads. Centreline rise and ridge-face rise are measured from the same reference line at the wall, not from the floor.
