How the estimate works

Multiply board area by the chosen gallons or feet per 1,000 sq ft, then add your allowance. Divide each material total by its actual package size and round up to a full package. Subtract unopened full packages already on hand to get the buying list. For example, 1,000 sq ft × 9.4 gal / 1,000 sq ft × 1.10 = 10.34 gal, so three 4.5-gal containers provide 13.5 gal. Tape: 1,000 × 370 / 1,000 × 1.10 = 407 ft, so two 250-ft rolls provide 500 ft.

USG lists approximately 9.4 gal per 1,000 sq ft for its Midweight ready-mix joint compound and approximately 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft for its paper joint tape. Replace these example rates with your product data or an actual seam takeoff. Full-surface skim coats, multiple layers of board, repairs and unusually dense corners may require a separate estimate. This tool does not determine a finish level or recommend a compound for a specific assembly.
