Board and Batten Calculator — Spacing & Layout
Plan even batten spacing in inches or millimetres. Compare layouts, see a scaled wall and print precise installation marks.
WALL PLANNING
Plan your batten spacing
Choose an even spacing, then mark every batten from the same wall edge.
Clear gap between battens
120 in wall · 6 battens · 3.5 in actual face · 48 in high

Installation marks from the left wall edge
Each measurement starts at the same origin. Do not repeatedly measure a rounded gap. Displayed marks are rounded to 0.001 of the selected unit.
| Batten | Left edge, in | Centre, in | Right edge, in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.0 | 1.75 | 3.5 |
| 2 | 23.3 | 25.05 | 26.8 |
| 3 | 46.6 | 48.35 | 50.1 |
| 4 | 69.9 | 71.65 | 73.4 |

How spacing is calculated
Subtract the combined width of the battens from the wall width. Divide the remaining space by one fewer than the batten count when battens sit at both edges, or one more when the outer gaps match the inner gaps.
For the default wall, (120 − 6 × 3.5) ÷ 5 = 19.8 inches. A gap is the clear opening; centre-to-centre spacing also includes one batten width. Measure actual timber before installation.
This tool plans vertical decorative battens on one unobstructed rectangular wall. It does not specify exterior siding, structural fastening, rail joints or purchased stock lengths. The drawing is proportional, not a full-size cutting template.
The RONA wall-moulding worksheet uses the same width-conservation principle for framed openings.
Next: estimate the paint
Use the paint calculator with the measured exposed wall and batten surfaces. Add exposed timber edges separately and use the coverage rate on your paint. This layout does not calculate those extra edge surfaces.
